FAQ
Can you successfully sleep train your child without a sleep consultant?
Can you successfully sleep train your child without a sleep consultant? Absolutely! The catch is that the internet has an abundance of information on sleep. There are many books dedicated to sleep. With time and research, you are capable of sifting through the information and finding the science and tools you need. But, it is very easy to stumble upon information and recommendations that are inaccurate. By working with a sleep consultant, I can provide you with evidence based information, a sleep plan, and one on one support.
At what age can I start sleep training?
For formal sleep training, I require your child to be at least 4 months old (adjusted). This is when your child’s sleep cycles have matured enough to begin a sleep schedule. I do offer a newborn package for those children who are younger than 4 months old. This package is not a sleep training package, but offers tools and education to provide your baby with a safe sleep environment, an environment conducive for sleep, and recommendations to begin teaching your baby how to fall asleep independently.
Will my child have to “cry it out”?
Many people believe sleep training means you place your baby in their crib and leave them until they fall asleep. While yes, there are some methods where there are less interactions with the child, there is so much more to sleep training! When we work together, we focus on sleep as a whole, not just on the method. If you choose to work with me, we will discuss sleep environment, sleep routine, sleep schedule, feedings, as well as the method. There are various methods that can be implemented for sleep training. Each method will be tailored specifically to your child and your family in order to be successful. Although your child does not have to “cry it out”, there will more likely than not be some level of crying involved. No matter how gentle the method, this is a change to your child. Children (and adults) have a difficult time with change, and therefore, protest against this change. Crying is a form of communication. With consistency, and a biologically appropriate sleep schedule, crying will be a short term part of sleep training.
